the end is upon us. it's kind of sad really . . . . april is such a beautiful month. yes, i do happen to hold a little bias, considering it just so happens to be the residential home of my birthday on the calendar. but alas, i am sad because april means so much more.
originally, it was the second month on the roman calendar. as time passed on however, in blew the winds of change. january and february were added around 700 b.c.e. by king numa pompilius, and the month of april was offically declared the fourth month of the calendar year during the time of decemvirs in about 450 b.c.e.
would you believe that at one time it only had 29 days? well . . . . it did. and just as the extra day has been added throughout the millenia, april has come to signify change. the traditional latin etymology comes from the word aperire, which means "to open," going along with the notion that trees and plants "open" up throughout the month.
it's a special time . . . . it's the month of easter (the anglo saxons called it oster-monath) . . . . it's the month of baseball (countless fans await opening day all winter). its birthstone is the diamond, yes... the diamond . . . . and its birth flower is the daisy. it's a sweet month. a time of great excitement. am i sad it's over? yeah... a little bit. but the good news is, we have a whole 'nother april to look forward to.
april 2010 here we come!
until twenty eight.
