the senator: a baltimore icon

baltimore's favorite place to watch a movie is the senator theater. in fact . . . . sometime's it's even maryland's favorite . . . . or the east coast's favorite. and every once in a blue moon, it's the world's premier place to go. why? because it has one thing that most modern theaters lack.

it has the one thing that can't be replicated . . . . the one thing that lures a large stockade of movie stars to appear at its screenings . . . . the one thing that attracts a daunting list of famous directors to pass through its doors. quite simply, it has charm.

since 1939, the senator has been a place where an entire city has allowed itself to get enveloped in the big screen. multiple generations have grown up going to the senator, and they in turn have brought their children there, while renewing their love and appreciation for its atmosphere.

unfortunately, on sunday march 15, 2009 . . . . the senator closed its doors for good . . . . ending an incredible and unforgettable seventy year run. this came rather unexpectadly for many of us, as just two nights previously, my friends and i had attended a routine friday night screening to see the brand new movie "watchmen."
currently . . . . it awaits its fate on the auction block . . . . a sad state of affairs for sure.
more to come...
