these babies were originally created with the practical side of the future in mind. they are fully equipped with a power lacing technique (see it here), and some magnetic capabilities. during production, they were supposed to be featured in a scene where marty plays "slamball," a futuristic game similar to 3-d racquetball where the participants used the magnetic properties in their shoes to climb walls. because of this, they have the words "nike mag" emblazoned in the back of the heel, and are referred to by this name. such a complicated scene was never filmed (due to costs, of course) and the shoes were never used to their full capabilities.
even though nike filed two distinct patents in 1990 (following the november 1989 release of the film), they never reached the factory lines . . . . many have been waiting years to rock these sacred shoes. after endless complaints and petitions, nike finally released some 'back to the future inspired' shoes this past year. it was . . . . at best . . . . a mediocre attempt to please a needling fan base. they trickled into the market on an extremely limited run (of 350) ranging anywhere in price from $600-$2,000. ridiculous . . . . huh? to make it even more amusing, they barely look like the originals. anyone who was brave enough to shell out the dough, got a product that was only a 'somewhat' realistic version of their clamoured treasure.
on a recent trip to the mall with my girlfriend, i noticed some shoes through the window of a shop that immediately caught my eye. now . . . . i've always been one for sweet kicks . . . . but these were different. at first glance to the naked eye, they bore a striking resemblance to marty mcfly's gorgeous pair of nikes!(not to mention that they happen to boast the school colors of my very own washington college)!! ...a diamond in the rough! ...a needle in a hay stack! ...somethin' sweet for muh feet!!! i was obviously excited. and she could tell that . . . . she even told me that i should get them. but what happened next was the biggest surprise of all...
so thank you molly. thank you for the effort. i love you for being my girlfriend, but i love you even more for the effort that you exert. i couldn't ask for anything more. every single day, it just becomes even clearer. i really am the luckiest guy in the world.not quite legal,
'til twenty one.
